God’s Unchanging Character

Unchanging Character

Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

Our Imagination & The Devil’s Lies

When we were yet sinners and unrepentant, we looked at the unchanging character of God as boring. Perhaps we thought anything that stays the same for that long must be stale. Our hearts were flitting this way and that, looking for freshness, excitement and ultimately—life. Ironically, all the things that feel like life to the carnal man bring death over time.

How many times did we have to test those waters of poison before we finally ceded to the truth? Maybe you are still there. Still questioning if perhaps you have not drunk from the poisoned waters of carnality the right way yet. Maybe trying just one more avenue will bring you to the utopia your imagination promises. But it never happens.

Every one of our hare brained ideas still lands us in the same quagmire, only deeper every time. Only when we eventually call on the name of Jesus and find some solid ground, do we realize just how crazy we were to try the same things through different avenues, over and over again, expecting different results each time.

                      Christ Our Anchor

Once our feet have touched solid ground, we realize what a blessing it is. We are able to look at God as our fortress and our protector. The Creator of the universe is now the anchor of our souls. At first we lie on the solid ground given to us, panting and gasping, relieved at what we have been saved from. Then we look across the expanse of shifting landscape we were once a part of. We feel it’s vacuum power sucking us back, calling our names, tempting us in every way. If this doesn’t work, the shifting landscape will rock our refuge with violent threats and storms to try to reclaim what once belonged to it.

At these moments, if we choose rightly, we bless the name of the Lord and draw nearer to Him. We find that what the enemy has meant to destroy us, instead, serves the purpose of our Lord in drawing us nearer to Him. In increasing measures, we find out what it means to serve a God who does not change. And we see that it is good. He is not stale or boring. His unchanging character brings security to lives that are very fragile. And despite what it looked like from the outside, here indeed is life and freshness.

                           Life And Creativity

Although God’s character is unchanging, He is very creative. He can speak new things into existence with ease. And in His every breath is life. Let’s receive that breath and let His life flow through us!

The enemy came to steal, kill and destroy. Jesus came to give us life and life in abundance. Hallelujah!
