I Won’t Surrender—Unless It’s To You

We’ve been taught to never give up,

To fight the good fight every day.

To never surrender, to hold our position

And keep our eyes fixed on the Way.

These are good precepts—great to remember,

In times when we’re down and feel blue.

I cry to the Lord when evil draws nigh:

“I won’t surrender—unless it’s to You!”

To stay on our course is the greatest of causes,

We must never swerve, halt or sway.

Let’s keep our eyes firmly fixed on the prize,

And keep up our strength day by day.

When the battle horn echoes from mountain to hill,

And we haste to assemble our crew,

Then the foremost among us will lead us in song:

“Lord, I won’t surrender—unless it’s to You!”

When the cannons are roaring, the enemy taunts us,

He shows us our weakness and shame,

But our gracious Lord, from heavenly Zion,

Shows us how our worth to reclaim.

And once we have that firmly established,

It holds us together like glue.

And we can righteously shout in our triumph:

“I won’t surrender—unless it’s to You!”

Each day we have cause more and  more to rejoice,

If in the true Vine we abide, not forsaking,

For day after day we advance in our faith,

And even the battles become our own making.

The fight makes us stronger it can’t be denied,

Though we may become weary it’s true;

“Oh, Lord give me strength and skill with the sword,

So that I won’t surrender—unless it’s to You!”

All of our firmness and skill in the skirmish,

Comes from God’s hand—it covers our own.

We inherit so much when we enter His family,

Great are the riches—to know and be known.

All the more reason to say with face shining,

“Every day our allegiance is new.”

And with that allegiance comes passion that’s burning:

“God, I won’t surrender—unless it’s to You!”
