Psalm 62:5-6 Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken. –NIV 84’
Many Illegitimate Options
How many things do we find rest in? Now more than ever it is possible to create illusions of security and rest in corruptible things. The temptation is, to put our eggs of hope for rest in many baskets, in case any of them fail. If we are fortunate, they all fail at once, so our illusions are forever shattered.
Some find rest in entertainment. others find it in money. Some find it in human relationships. Still others go way out of bounds into occult meditation practices to find what they long for. There are innumerable things on this earth to find rest and security in. But David passionately lays out a single minded focus. His focus was on God. He did not say “find rest O my soul in God, and in case that doesn’t work, also find rest in all the things in this world that interest me.”
He was willing to put all his eggs in one basket and depend wholly upon the Lord to give him rest. In order for us to follow his example, we need to receive the same revelation he had. Will we allow the Spirit of God within us to ruin the idols we have erected by showing us just how shaky they are?
Are we going to be offended when the Holy Spirit knocks those crutches out from under us? Or will we allow the crutches to fall? And when they do fall, we fall as well, since we were leaning on them. But it’s okay. We can all use some time on our faces before God. Rest assured, eventually He will lift us up, brush off the dirt and exalt us in His own way and in His own time.
Pursue Rest Passionately
But while we are on our faces before Him, let’s repent. And let’s find rest. We can wrestle with God for the peace He promises. His yoke is easy and His burden is light. He is the Prince of peace—let’s allow Him to reign in our lives and He will impart that peace. The trouble begins when He is given less than first place.
So let’s allow all our interests to come under the supremacy of God. And above all, let’s realize none of them can give us true rest. Only God can do that—if we let Him. Then we can truly say,“He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.”
